Thesis Title: Windows into the Past: An Analysis of Buried Neolithic Land Surfaces in Britain

Professor Chris Scarre
Dr Robin Skeates

About

Excavations at Neolithic monuments in Britain have revealed a range of buried features and deposits – e.g. pits, postholes, and lithic scatters - sealed and preserved beneath the overlying monuments. This buried evidence provides a window into the nature of pre-monument land use and occupation, and the potential re-use of significant places in the landscape. Through a detailed review of excavation reports and related literature, I am investigating these buried traces of human activity to determine how frequently they actually occur, and whether temporal or geographic patterns in the nature or frequency of the evidence can be identified.
